Offering a High Mileage VSC? Better Pick a Good One.

Dealerships have been reporting over the last two quarters that F&I profits are growing, even in the midst of a once-in-a-generation new car shortage. What is the product that is saving them now?

VSC’s...more specifically, high mileage VSC’s. As car shoppers scramble to find the new cars and trucks they want, most have to settle for a model that wasn’t their top choice or they are opting for a late-model used as a ‘stop-gap’ until the new car inventories start to come back to pre-pandemic levels. But one thing is for sure...they want to be protected until then.

Now more than ever, car shoppers should have access to a longer amount of protection from high mechanical repairs.

So, what should your dealership look for in a high mileage VSC?

  • It should cover all powertrain components deep into seal & gaskets with the optional add-on for electrical, brakes, and suspension. After all, buyers will want the longest, most comprehensive coverage they can get at today’s labor/parts costs.
  • Your dealership should be able to easily private label the plan to maximize the reach within your local market and as the extra layer of ‘stickiness’ to make them come back to your store for all service/repairs.
  • Make sure it offers 24/7 roadside and that it is transferable. Many buyers will want to know they can pass it on to the next owner and use that to justify a few dollars more in the selling price.
  • Marketing support from your F&I administrator is key. Not just collateral to have in the office or online, but training and robust customer service are important tools to help F&I be as successful as possible in selling high mileage VSC.

High mileage VSC’s cannot only give a much-needed boost to PVR, but it can help buyers say ‘Yes’ to a late model used vehicle they otherwise may not have considered before. Pushing powertrain protection out to 150k miles gives invaluable financial peace of mind at a time when we all could use a little of that ourselves.
